Environmental adventure for school classes and families

Johann Jacobs MuseumJune 27, 2024

Between June 12 and 15, the Johann Jacobs Museum in Zurich and the Digital Museum of Learning welcomed school classes and families on an adventure through the history of environmental education.

Children create a landscape together on a screen.

Exhibition and fanzine workshop

The “Making the Environment Matter” exhibition attracted more than 150 visitors, including many school classes accompanied by their teachers. The groups explored the interactive exhibition as part of a two-hour guided activity.

Children also created their own fanzine (magazine) in a workshop organized in partnership with ARTIZIP. The creative session inspired young visitors to reflect on their relationship with nature and raised awareness of environmental issues through both educational and artistic exploration.

Touching allowed

The exhibition was designed to be hands-on, inviting children to engage directly with the exhibits and artifacts. At the “Dinner with Nature” table, visitors could create their own landscapes and learn about environmental pioneers such as American marine biologist and conservationist Rachel Carson and French geographer and writer Élisée Reclus.

The museum’s basement level transported them to an underwater world where they could explore invertebrates, delicate Blaschka glass models, and the fascinating water monsters and bacteria found in London Monster Soup.

Children love to be creative

One of the highlights for the children was the creative workshop where they could illustrate and personalize their fanzines to take home. This interactive activity extended the learning experience beyond the walls of the museum and provided a keepsake of their visit.

The exhibition seamlessly blended education and fun, creating a memorable adventure for young learners.
